Astro Scope: Venus, Desire, and the Heart

Everybody is hollering about Venus retrograde. Before we turn it into another prediction about returning lovers, let’s look at her movement—and what it gives us to examine.

Venus began her retrograde in Scorpio on October 3. She returns to Libra on October 25 and turns direct on November 13, Pacific time. First the depths, then the scales.

During this passage, Venus approaches the space between Earth and the Sun. This is inferior conjunction. Her journey behind the Sun happens at superior conjunction, during another phase of her cycle. Both can obscure her in the solar glare, but this passage carries our evening star toward her emergence as the morning star. The conjunction falls October 23 here on the West Coast, October 24 UTC.

A familiar light withdraws. We lose sight of her for a time. Then she greets us from another side of the day.

I work with retrograde as a re-look: a return over familiar territory with an opportunity to see what we missed. With Venus, that territory includes love, pleasure, beauty, money, attraction, and worth.

What draws us—and what does being desired do for us?

We tend to tell the pretty story about Venus. Flowers, romance, sensuality. But Venus also brings us into the business of wanting, exchanging, and persuading. Beauty can become currency. Affection can become leverage. Attraction can become a way of securing power.

Scorpio asks us to look beneath the presentation.

Why do I need people to be attracted to me?

What does their desire confirm? That I matter? That I still have influence? That I have not become invisible?

I don’t need anyone to desire me. I am being me. Someone’s attraction can be lovely, but it is not what gives me substance.

Enjoying being desired is one thing. Organizing your behavior around keeping people hungry for you is another.

You learn which look gets attention. How much affection to offer, how much to withhold. How to keep someone hoping when you have no intention of meeting them honestly.

You may not want the person. You want their wanting.

That is manipulation. There is a narcissistic quality to making another person’s longing serve as proof of your importance: their feelings become useful because of what they reflect back to you.

Am I expressing myself—or arranging a response?

Can I enjoy my beauty, my body, my sensuality without needing an audience? Can I let someone lose interest without trying to pull them back?

If my power depends on keeping you interested, how free am I?

These questions belong beside the financial ones. What do we spend to remain desirable? What do we trade away to remain comfortable? Where have love, status, money, and security become so entangled that we cannot tell what we actually want?

Across from Scorpio sits Taurus, another sign Venus rules. That polarity brings the body, pleasure, possession, and security into conversation with intimacy, surrender, and shared resources.

What is mine to hold? What can I share without losing myself? Where has my need for reassurance become a demand on another person?

The glandular correspondences deepen this inquiry. Medical-astrology writing associates Venus with the thymus and reproductive glands, while Scorpio also carries reproductive-gland associations.

Here, the thymus—the high heart, the intelligent heart—enters the conversation with our sexual centers.

Head. Heart. Desire. Who is leading?

Attraction can arrive before we know much about someone. The body answers, and the mind immediately begins writing a story.

We have chemistry. This must mean something.

Perhaps. But what?

Sometimes chemistry is my shadow recognizing yours. My hunger meeting your hunger. An old pattern finding a familiar doorway. An enormous charge can exist before care, trust, or honesty has had time to develop.

The sensation is real. The meaning we attach to it deserves examination.

Just because you feel something in your groin does not mean you have to act on it.

There is room between feeling and action. Room to discover whether you are interested in the person—or in what their attention does for you. Room for the heart to recognize who is standing before you.

That pause belongs within this retrograde.

As Venus withdraws from evening visibility, we can examine the stories we habitually attach to attraction. Who taught us what makes a woman desirable, a man valuable, a relationship worth keeping? Do our choices reflect our values, or our fear of being unwanted?

Then Venus returns to Libra, one of her own signs, and the scales have something substantial to weigh.

What am I bringing? What am I asking? Where have I mistaken being pursued for being cared for? Can I meet another person without needing them to confirm me?

Balance between head, heart, and sexual desire asks each to participate. The body can want. The mind can discern. The heart can remain present.

Earth • Sky • Heart

Now that we’ve swum through the cosmos with Venus, let’s bring it back down to Earth.

The Schumann resonances are part of Earth’s electromagnetic environment. Alongside that physical phenomenon, I contemplate the frequency of Mother Nature: the living presence we return to when our attention has wandered too far from ourselves.

To me, Earth is Mother—the ground of creation, where life takes form. Venus brings us into relationship with that life through beauty, pleasure, attraction, and what we value.

But how are we moving through her garden? Present in ourselves, or arranging ourselves to be wanted?

Where has my desire to be desired pulled me out of my own center?

What part of myself am I willing to sacrifice to obtain somebody else’s desire? What actions am I taking, what behaviors am I trying to elicit, what thoughts am I feeding just to gain their attention?

Am I silencing something true? Agreeing to something I don’t want? Ignoring what I already know because I like how their wanting makes me feel?

Bring it back to me. Back to myself.

Feel the ground beneath your feet. Notice your breath, the air, the life around you. Give Mother Nature your attention long enough to hear your own experience again.

What do I want before I calculate whether it will make me more desirable?

As Venus returns to Libra, we bring these discoveries to the scales. Where has the exchange become unequal? How much attention have I given another person while withdrawing it from myself?

How much of myself have I placed on the bargaining table simply to be wanted?

Balance begins with noticing where we have abandoned our own weight on those scales.

Can I remain rooted in my own essence while meeting another person with an open heart?

The Crone will take us further into the energetics of sex in a separate article. For this Venus passage, we begin with the relationship between desire, discernment, and the heart—and what we are ready to reclaim.

Your Venus Retrograde Inquiry

These readings follow Scorpio’s examination of desire and attachment into Libra’s reconsideration of balance and exchange. Read your rising sign for the house-based perspective and your Sun sign for another point of reflection. Ophiuchus receives a symbolic reading alongside the twelve tropical signs.

Aries

Venus’s Scorpio passage invites you to examine intimacy, shared money, and the agreements that bind you to another person. Where does generosity become obligation? Where do you offer access to yourself because you fear what might happen if you refuse? Notice whether you use intensity to move past a conversation that needs time.

As Venus returns to Libra, the relationship itself comes into focus: can both people negotiate honestly, or does one person’s urgency determine the terms? Your honesty begins where you stop treating compromise as defeat and start distinguishing it from abandoning yourself.

Ask yourself: What am I agreeing to because I want closeness—and what would I choose if I trusted that I could survive someone’s disappointment?

Taurus

Venus is your ruler, and her retrograde begins in your opposite sign. This makes partnership a particularly useful mirror. Examine the role you occupy: dependable one, beautiful one, provider, peacemaker. Does that role leave room for who you are becoming? Familiarity can feel reassuring even when the relationship has stopped nourishing you.

When Venus returns to Libra, look at the daily arrangements supporting that bond—the labor, schedules, care, and small accommodations. A relationship’s balance often becomes visible in ordinary life long before anyone names it.

Ask yourself: Am I staying true to myself, or maintaining a version of me that keeps this relationship comfortable?

Gemini

Begin with your daily life. What does your desire for approval ask you to do, day after day? You may be answering messages immediately, taking on extra work, or making yourself endlessly useful. Notice where being appreciated has become dependent on being available.

As Venus returns to Libra, pleasure, creativity, and romance enter the review. Can you enjoy making something without calculating its reception? Can flirtation remain playful without becoming a test of your worth? Give your attention to what genuinely delights you, including the things nobody applauds.

Ask yourself: What would I stop doing—and what would I begin—if I no longer needed my usefulness or charm to earn affection?

Cancer

Venus in Scorpio brings romance, pleasure, creativity, and the wish to be cherished into view. Notice the difference between enjoying attention and organizing your emotional life around receiving it. Are you expressing affection freely, or hoping it will secure a particular response? Your creative life deserves the same honesty: what wants to emerge without being made pleasing first?

As Venus returns to Libra, the inquiry moves toward home, family, and belonging. Old lessons about earning love may become easier to recognize in your present choices.

Ask yourself: What did I learn I had to be in order to be loved—and am I still performing it?

Leo

Start beneath the presentation, in your private life. What happens when you come home and nobody needs you to shine? Venus in Scorpio invites an examination of emotional foundations, family patterns, and the security you seek behind your public confidence. You may discover that the wish to be admired conceals a simpler wish to feel welcome as you are.

When Venus returns to Libra, examine your words. Are you saying what you mean, or delivering the version that preserves your image? Honest communication gives others a chance to meet you beyond the performance.

Ask yourself: Who am I willing to let people see when I cannot guarantee that they will admire me?

Virgo

Pay attention to your language during the Scorpio portion of this retrograde. What do you soften, explain away, or leave unsaid to remain agreeable? Discernment can become exhausting when it is used mainly to anticipate another person’s reaction. Notice how much thought you devote to getting the tone exactly right while your actual need remains unspoken.

As Venus returns to Libra, money and self-worth enter the review. What do you charge, accept, give, or decline? Your time and care have limits, even when someone appreciates your willingness to exceed them.

Ask yourself: Where am I explaining my worth instead of honoring it through my choices?

Libra

Venus is your ruler, and the Scorpio passage begins with the question of value. Examine spending, possessions, income, and the reassurance you seek through them. What do you purchase to feel more desirable? What do you tolerate because it protects your comfort?

When Venus returns to your sign, the inquiry becomes personal: how much of your presentation reflects you, and how much has been negotiated around other people’s preferences? Harmony requires your presence. An arrangement that depends on your disappearance deserves another look.

Ask yourself: What would change if I allowed my own preference to carry as much weight as everyone else’s?

Scorpio

Venus begins her retrograde in your sign, making identity, presentation, and attraction central to this reflection. Observe how you use intensity. Does it invite honesty, or keep you in control of how much others can know? Being difficult to read can feel powerful, but it can also prevent the closeness you say you want.

As Venus returns to Libra, make room for private examination: old attachments, concealed longing, and habits you repeat without an audience. You do not have to reveal everything publicly to become more truthful with yourself.

Ask yourself: Do I want to be genuinely known—or do I want to remain desirable without risking being seen?

Sagittarius

The Scorpio weeks invite quieter work: noticing attachments you keep out of view, private fantasies, and relationships that continue living within you after their outward form has ended. Are you calling something freedom because you have avoided naming how much it matters? Give yourself room to acknowledge longing without letting it dictate your next move.

When Venus returns to Libra, friendship and belonging come into focus. Examine the circles in which you feel valued. Can you disagree, change direction, or become less entertaining and still feel welcome?

Ask yourself: Where does my claim of independence conceal a need for acceptance I have not admitted?

Capricorn

Begin with friendships, networks, and your hopes for the future. Venus in Scorpio asks you to examine what belonging costs. Are certain connections sustained by shared affection, or by usefulness, influence, and access? Notice whether your ambitions have begun choosing your relationships for you.

When Venus returns to Libra, public standing and career become part of the review. Recognition can be satisfying, but it cannot answer every question of worth. Consider what you are building and whether the life required to maintain it remains one you want to inhabit.

Ask yourself: Whose approval is shaping my future—and do I actually want the life that approval requires?

Aquarius

The Scorpio passage brings your public role into view. What are you known for, and how firmly have you attached yourself to that identity? Being admired for independence, originality, or insight can create its own performance. Notice where you feel unable to admit uncertainty because others expect you to know.

As Venus returns to Libra, beliefs and larger perspectives enter the examination. Let your ideas encounter your lived experience. A belief deserves reconsideration when maintaining it requires you to ignore what is happening before you.

Ask yourself: What am I protecting because it is true—and what am I protecting because it makes me feel exceptional?

Pisces

Venus in Scorpio invites you to revisit beliefs about love, devotion, and the meaning you assign to powerful encounters. Does a connection feel destined because it holds genuine care, or because the story makes uncertainty easier to bear? Keep room for wonder while examining the agreements and behavior within the relationship.

As Venus returns to Libra, shared resources, intimacy, and obligation come into focus. Where have compassion and sacrifice become tangled? You can care deeply and still need clear terms, financial clarity, and the freedom to refuse.

Ask yourself: What am I calling sacred because I am afraid to examine what it asks me to surrender?

Ophiuchus

The healer’s inquiry begins with the wish to be needed. Where does helping become part of how you secure closeness? Notice whether someone’s dependence reassures you, even while you say you want them to become free.

Across this Venus passage, examine the exchange between care, intimacy, and authority. Can another person disagree with you, outgrow your guidance, or leave without being cast as ungrateful? Let the return toward Libra’s balance invite a relationship in which care supports each person’s autonomy.

Ask yourself: Can I offer care without needing to remain essential to someone else’s life?
